Sensitive Sam, by Marla Roth-Fisch
Poor Sam, he is having a rough day, he just can’t seem to cope with all the input he is receiving. The bright light from the sun, the feel of his clothes, the smell of his breakfast and even going to the bathroom has his neurons crying out!
The author, Marla Roth-Fisch does an awesome job illustrating how Sam, who is a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, feels about the struggles of getting through the day. Sam’s problems come to a head at school when an uncomfortable shoe collides with mud!
Sam’s Parents are depicted as concerned as his teachers are, and a great example of how to deal with helping a child with SPD. Fortunately, Sam’s school has an Occupational Therapist on staff that explains some ways to help Sam and what the goals of Therapy are.
Marla gives us a good overview of some ways Occupational therapy is used to work with SPD, and incorporating a Sensory Diet, which does not involve the dinner table. We get to see Sam have some achievements over those activities that were once a struggle, and how his perspective on what he is capable of changes for the better. Marla thought ahead and let us know that Sam’s story will have a happy ending on the book cover.
A great book to add to the home library, and one for your teachers too! Here is where to get it!
